Prince Narkortu Teye is a sport scientist, journalist and entrepreneur with years of experience in the sports and health industries, having worked with the likes of renowned global football news portal Goal.com and the WHO Collaborating Centre for Advocacy and Training in Pharmacovigilance (also known as the African Collaborating Centre for Pharmacovigilance and Surveillance (ACC)) in Accra, Ghana. In his words, he is “passionate about all things sports, data, research, technology and media”.
Prince knows Africa’s sports industry and its challenges too well. His knowledge is not only premised on being a staunch sports fan but also an active player in the industry by his works as a researcher, journalist and entrepreneur.
His media career kicked off while pursuing his university undergraduate programme. From a defining move of starting a football blog, he joined the campus radio station as a volunteer sports journalist, rising to become the Head of Sports in his final year.
He has worked with footy-ghana.com as a sub-editor, African Football Shop as a Ghanaian reporter, getfootballnewsfrance.com as an African correspondent, and UK-based just-football.com as a Ghanaian correspondent. Since 2015, he has worked for Goal as a writer/reporter, covering major international events like the Caf Awards Gala, the Africa Women Cup of Nations, among others.
Presently, he also makes television punditry appearances for national television outfits GTV and GTV Sports+.
Prince’s media works have not gone without recognition. In 2015, he earned a double nomination for the Ghana Tertiary Awards in the categories of Most Influential Student Radio Presenter and Most Influential Student Writer/Blogger. A year later, he was shortlisted for the Student Sports Journalist of the Year award at the KNUST/NUGS Excellence Awards.
In the area of health, Prince, a holder of a BSc Biological Sciences degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, has years of experience working with the WHO Collaborating Centre for Training and Advocacy in Pharmacovigilance.
It is during his time with the ACC that he developed a keen interest in data, having had to take up the role of Data Manager. Owing to his good works, he was handed additional duties as Project Lead, Project Coordinator and Field Supervisor. This marked a significant step in his development of research and field expertise.
Some of the major research and data collection projects in which he has been involved include (1) Safety Experience during Real-world Usage of Injectable Artesunate in Public Health Facilities in Uganda and Ghana: Outcomes of a Modified Cohort Event Monitoring Study (sponsored by Switzerland-based Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV); played role of a Data Manager); (2) Factors Associated with Low Reporting of Adverse Events following Immunization among Healthcare Workers in Ghana (sponsored by the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); played multiple roles of Data Manager, Internal Project Coordinator, and Field Supervisor; and (3) Post-authorization Non-interventional Safety Study of DKT’s Family Planning Products (Lydia Postpil, Lydia Daily Oral Contraceptive Pill, Lydia Intra-uterine Device, Kiss and Fiesta Condoms) among the General Population in Ghana (sponsored by DKT International Inc. Ghana; played multiple roles of Project Lead, Data Manager and Field Supervisor).
A master’s degree holder in Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences from Brunel University London, Prince identifies the little use of scientific and technical methodologies and innovations as a huge drawback of Africa’s sports industry.
It is against this situation that he decided to dedicate his career to helping bridge the gap between Africa and the rest of the world. In line, he founded the ASC as a primary centre of sports excellence to champion the use of scientific and technical methodologies and innovations – largely on the arms of data, research and technology – on the continent.
