African Sports Centre releases maiden Ghana Premier League Report

The African Sports Centre (ASC), continental leader in sports data, research and technology, has released its first survey report on the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Titled ‘2019 Ghana Premier League Report’, the document provides insights into fan/consumer behavior in relation to revenue opportunities and industry properties and elements.

It focuses on Interest and Awareness, Patronage and Consumption, and Commerce. The survey, with a sample size of 3,300 respondents, was conducted in Ghana. Data was collected in every administrative district in each administrative region of the country, giving the research and its findings a strong base.

The report has been shared with major stakeholders of the sports industry including the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ghana Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ghana National Sports Authority, Ghana Olympic Committee, GPL clubs, corporate/business entities, the media and fans. It is also available on ASC’s website for free download.

“We’re excited by this report because it serves our interest of driving the sports industry to a kind that functions on scientific and technical principles. Our mission as a company is to champion the use of scientific and technical methodologies and innovations for the development of sports, largely by data, research and technology,” says ASC Founder and CEO Prince Narkortu Teye.

         

Under Interest and Awareness, the report provides insights into Ghana’s general football interest level, awareness and followership of the GPL as well as data on the size of GPL clubs’ fanbase, teams tipped to win the 2019-2020 league season and the most exciting player in the championship.

For Patronage and Consumption, the report delves into fans’ preference between watching a GPL match versus watching a foreign league game on a typical matchday, watching a match at the stadium versus following the game via media, and sources of news consumption – TV, radio, online and print. Ranking of the top sources for each outfit was also provided.

Under commerce, the report provides data on jersey – patronage and appeal, betting, and drinks and beverages.

“One of the main objectives of this research is to provide data for relevant industry entities to help informed and strategic decisions, interventions and positioning. This will not only go a long way to boost the development of the industry but also help pursue our four adopted UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of: (8) Decent Work and Economic Growth, (9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and (17) Partnerships for the Goals,” Teye added.

ASC plans to replicate the Premier League Report in other African countries.
